"I've been fascinated by military history for as long as I can remember. Growing up, it was the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things that captured my imagination. Learning about the Australians who fought along the Kokoda Track left a lasting impression on me, and experiencing that place for myself became something I'd always dreamed of doing. When the opportunity arose to document an expedition across the Track, the idea was surprisingly simple: what if we filmed the entire experience, from beginning to end, and brought audiences along for the journey? I wanted to create something immersive and cinematic. Something that captured the physical challenge, the extraordinary landscapes, the exhaustion, the humour and the unpredictable moments that come with taking a group of ordinary Australians into such an extraordinary environment. At the time, I imagined we were making a feature-length documentary. What I hadn't anticipated was just how much of a story would unfold in front of our cameras. As the expedition progressed, I began discovering the people behind the journey. Their personalities, friendships, struggles and willingness to open up revealed something far more compelling than I could ever have scripted. When I returned home and began working through the footage, it became clear that these stories couldn't be adequately told in a single film. The documentary was becoming something much bigger. It was during the editing process that the historical storytelling also began to take on a life of its own. Moments filmed at places such as Brigade Hill made me realise that to truly appreciate what we were witnessing in the present, audiences needed to understand the extraordinary events that had unfolded on that same ground in 1942. What began as an immersive account of a modern expedition gradually evolved into two intertwined narratives: the remarkable history of the Kokoda campaign and the deeply personal experiences of the people walking the Track today. Another unexpected part of the journey was the connection we formed with the Koiari people. Our porters and guides became far more than the people helping us across the mountains. They became friends, and ultimately family. Their generosity, humour, singing, stories and enduring connection to Kokoda became part of the very heart and soul of this documentary. I also had the extraordinary privilege of spending time with Kokoda veteran Reg Chard. Hearing his experiences and getting to know the man behind the history reinforced something that has stayed with me throughout this entire production: behind every story of courage and sacrifice was a real person, with fears, friendships, hopes and a life beyond the battlefield. Four years later, what began as a relatively simple filmmaking ambition has grown into a ten-part documentary series that has challenged me creatively and personally in ways I could never have imagined. My hope is that *Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda* brings this extraordinary place into people's living rooms like never before. That audiences come to know and care about the people walking the Track, develop a deeper appreciation for those who came before them, and recognise the indispensable contributions of the Papua New Guinean people. And perhaps, through these stories, viewers might find a little perspective on their own lives, the courage to reach out to someone, or a renewed sense of purpose. Because ultimately, this documentary isn't just about walking in the footsteps of heroes. It's about understanding the people behind the history, recognising the humanity we share, and considering what we choose to carry forward."

THE NARRATIVE VISION
Two stories. One extraordinary landscape.
What began as an ambitious attempt to capture the complete Kokoda experience gradually evolved into something far greater.
During the editing process, the personal journeys of the men and the extraordinary events of the 1942 campaign emerged as two equally important narratives.
Rather than treating the history as background to a modern expedition, the series uses firsthand testimony, archival footage, historical research and battlefield graphics to bring the events of Kokoda to life.
At the same time, observational filmmaking allows the contemporary story to unfold naturally, capturing friendships, personal struggles, humour and moments of unexpected vulnerability.
The landscape connects these two worlds, creating an immersive documentary that explores not only what happened on Kokoda, but the people whose lives have been shaped by it.

THE HISTORY
THE HUMAN JOURNEY
Four Years in the Making
PRODUCTION TIMELINE
What began as an ambitious idea in late 2022 has grown into an expansive ten-part documentary series. From the mountains of Papua New Guinea to years spent shaping the story in post-production, discover the journey behind bringing Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda to the screen.
01. Pre-Production
DECEMBER 2022 – MARCH 2023
Where the journey began.
The foundations of the documentary were established in late 2022, when an opportunity to document an expedition across Papua New Guinea's historic Kokoda Track sparked an ambitious filmmaking idea.
The original vision was to capture the complete experience, allowing audiences to follow the expedition from beginning to end and feel as though they were walking alongside its participants.
During the months that followed, preparations focused on the logistics, equipment and production planning required to undertake an independent documentary shoot in one of the world's most challenging environments.
What began as an ambitious expedition film would eventually develop into something far greater than originally imagined.

03. Post-Production
APRIL 2023 – PRESENT
Finding the story within the footage.
Post-production began while filming was still underway, marking the beginning of an extensive process of shaping the documentary into a cohesive ten-part series.
What followed was years of editing, historical research and storytelling, bringing together the expedition's human experiences with wartime accounts, archival material and the extraordinary events of the 1942 Kokoda campaign.
Through countless creative decisions, the individual stories gradually became part of a much larger narrative.
With all ten episodes now developed to fine-cut stage, the production is working towards its final sound, colour, historical graphics and licensing requirements.

02. Production & Filming
MARCH 2023 – MAY 2024
Capturing the journey.
Principal filming began in March 2023, when the production accompanied the expedition across Papua New Guinea's historic Kokoda Track. Filming in challenging and unpredictable conditions, the team captured everything from sweeping mountain landscapes to intimate conversations, moments of humour, hardship and emotional vulnerability.
The production continued well beyond the initial expedition, including the filming of a second group crossing in May 2024. Over an extended period, numerous hours of in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants, exploring their personal histories, experiences and
reflections in far greater detail.
This extensive process allowed the documentary to develop beyond a simple account of the expedition, providing the foundation for a deeply personal, character-driven series that brings together the experiences of modern Australians and the extraordinary history of Kokoda.

04. The Road to Release
CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS
Bringing Kokoda to audiences.
With the complete ten-part series assembled, attention has turned towards the final stages of bringing the documentary to audiences.
The production is pursuing the funding, partnerships and distribution opportunities needed to complete the remaining post-production work, secure the necessary archival and music licences, and prepare the series for public exhibition.
From potential community and commemorative screenings to wider broadcast, streaming and independent distribution opportunities, the next chapter will determine how these stories reach the public.
After years in the making, the journey towards release continues.

OUR FILMMAKING APPROACH
A Story Discovered, Not Written
Letting the Story Unfold.
There was no script to follow, no predetermined character arcs and no way of knowing what would unfold along the Kokoda Track.
The approach was simple: take cameras into the expedition, document the experience as authentically as possible and allow the people and their stories to reveal themselves naturally.
From moments of laughter and exhaustion to quiet conversations and unexpected vulnerability, the cameras captured the journey as it happened, without attempting to manufacture the drama.
It was only through the extensive interviews that followed, and the years spent working through the footage, that the full depth of these individual stories began to emerge. Seemingly ordinary moments took on greater significance as personal experiences, relationships and shared challenges gradually became part of a larger narrative.
Alongside this evolving human story, the history of the 1942 Kokoda campaign developed into an equally significant narrative, connecting the experiences of the present with the extraordinary events that unfolded on the same ground more than eighty years earlier.
What emerged was a ten-part documentary shaped not by a predetermined script, but by the people, their experiences and the remarkable journey they shared.

THE ROAD TO COMPLETION
The film exists. Now we need to finish it.
Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda has been independently produced and largely self-funded, with additional support from crowdfunding and individuals who believed in the project.
Through years of filming, extensive interviews, historical research and editing, that commitment has brought an ambitious ten-part documentary series to life. All ten episodes have now reached fine-cut stage, representing more than eight hours of completed storytelling.
However, bringing a documentary of this scale to audiences requires significant resources beyond the editing process.
The remaining stages include securing music and historical archival licences, completing original historical graphics and battle maps, professional sound design and mixing, final colour grading and preparing the series for distribution.
We are now actively pursuing grants, philanthropic support, production partnerships and other funding opportunities to help complete these final stages.
For individuals and organisations who share our belief in the importance of these stories, there is now an opportunity to help bring Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda across the finish line.
