ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY

Ten Episodes. One Extraordinary Journey.

An extraordinary expedition along Papua New Guinea's Kokoda Track brings a group of Australian men face to face with personal challenges, enduring friendships and the remarkable wartime history beneath their feet.

Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda follows a group of Australian men as they undertake one of the world's most historically significant treks.
Guided by military veterans and accompanied by Papua New Guinean porters, the men face the physical and emotional demands of the Kokoda Track. As friendships deepen and personal stories emerge, their journey becomes intertwined with the extraordinary events of the 1942 Kokoda campaign.
Across ten episodes, the documentary explores courage, sacrifice, mateship, vulnerability and the enduring connection between Australia, Papua New Guinea and the people who shaped this history.

In the mountains and jungles of Papua New Guinea, a group of ordinary Australian men embark on an extraordinary journey. Drawn from Barstool Brothers and The Man Walk, and accompanied by experienced military veterans and local Papua New Guinean guides and porters, the group sets out to complete the historic Kokoda Track. But the expedition soon becomes about far more than physical endurance. Through moments of hardship, humour, friendship and emotional honesty, the individual stories of the men begin to emerge. Each brings their own experiences, struggles and reasons for undertaking the journey. Alongside their contemporary experiences, the documentary explores the events of the 1942 Kokoda campaign, revealing the lives, decisions and sacrifices of the Australians who fought there and the indispensable contributions of the Papua New Guinean people. Filmed through an immersive, observational approach and shaped by extensive interviews and historical research, Where Heroes Walked: Kokoda allows these intertwined stories to unfold across ten episodes. The result is a deeply human exploration of the past and present — and a reminder that the significance of Kokoda lies not only in its history, but in the people whose lives have been shaped by it.
